What it is: Heartburn or acid reflux is when stomach acid splashes from your stomach into your esophagus causing a burning sensation. Constant heartburn over time can lead to erosion of the esophagus and can lead to cancer.
Treatment: To prevent and manage heartburn there are some things you can do before popping the anti-acids. Don’t go to bed with a full stomach, don’t overeat, eat slowly, wear loose fitting clothes, limit your consumption of onions, peppermint, chocolate, alcohol, caffeinated beverages such as coffee, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes, or high-fat foods, losing weight if you are overweight, and quit smoking. If your heartburn happens more than 3 days a week then see your doctor. He/She may prescribe a Rx to help you.
